BAPAM Performance Environment Day

What would an ideal performance environment look like? Is such a thing even possible when we work in such widely different spaces? How do our environments affect our health, our creativity, our social relationships? What can healthcare professionals, technicians, artists, support organisations and communities do to both support performing arts wellbeing and facilitate excellence in artistic practice?

Our Performance Environment Day explores these topics, from a healthcare perspective and including the experiences of other professionals including artists, technicians, educators and people working in arts support roles, some with additional needs due to illness, injury, difference or disability

At BAPAM we work with mental health specialists who have the knowledge and experience to help performing arts clients.

On 17th November, Clinical Psychologist Dr Anna Colton will be speaking at our training day about the Performance Environment, covering anxiety, how it affects performance, and how she works with adults and children in West End shows. The Accent Method Course

A 3-day course conducted by two of the leading names in vocal health will be taking place in Birmingham.

The course which is organised by the British Voice Association will be fairly practical with some time devoted to explaining the scientific rationale behind the technique. It is used widely in rehabilitation for voice disorders, but also used for training healthy voices and developing the dynamic range of performers.

The first two days of the course will take place on 12th and 13th July 2018 with a five month break followed by a final day in January 2019.

The technique is well researched and has a good evidence base and is designed to co-ordinate respiration, phonation, articulation and resonance to produce clear and well modulated speech.

Specialist speech and language therapist Sara Harris and singing teacher and voice coach Dinah Harris have been working together for many years, most notably at the multidisciplinary voice clinic in Lewisham Hospital.

Healthy Performance Workshops at The Actors Centre

Friday 10th November: Finding a Work-Life Balance in Changing Times

This 3 hour interactive workshop looks at ways of establishing a viable work-life balance and managing time effectively in the context of irregular jobs and irregular working patterns. These can affect health and well-being and impact on family and social life. The workshop illustrates ways of managing the stress reactions these unpredictable patterns can bring, and shows how to facilitate resilience. Participants will be able to raise appropriate issues that affect them personally and options for coping will be described and discussed. Suggestions for taking ideas further will be made. Book here

Health Education in the Arts Survey

Researcher, Lisa Brachfeld, from the MSc Performing Arts Medicine programme at University College London, invites musicians, dancers, actors, and singers who are professionals or students/teachers at accredited conservatoires to participate in a new study of health education in the performing arts. The aim is to prove that performers could benefit from more health and injury prevention education. Learning about attitudes towards this subject will help to improve the effectiveness of education curriculums.

Actor Bob Cryer Walks 100 Miles for BAPAM (and Werner Herzog)

“I walk for several reasons, but chief among them has become the positive effect it’s had on my mental health. Life as an actor and writer can be incredibly rewarding and I consider myself very lucky to be able to spend my days pursuing a career in the arts, but it’s vagaries can often render you confused, stressed and isolated. Walking can help clear the mind and gain some perspective. On the whole, I feel like I’ve been spared some of the darker spirals that can take hold during a bout of black dog, but many others are not so fortunate.

A career in the arts, which is so reliant on self evaluation, self expression and self examination, can place a more targeted kind of burden on a person’s mental health. And when you consider that one in four people in the UK will experience mental health issues at some point their life, then consider what the effects are on those in the performing arts.

Mind Out! Mental Health and Theatre Event

BAPAM’s Deborah Charnock will join the panel at this year’s Theatre Chaplaincy UK (TCUK) Spring Lecture, addressing mental health in the theatre. Stephen Fry will be giving a keynote speech entitled Mind Out! This occasion is part of a growing movement to break the taboo and stigma that still surrounds issues of mental health in the theatre. Stephen will then join in the panel discussion followed by Q&A, with panellists Dr Deborah Charnock, Chief Executive of BAPAM and lead advisor on the ArtsMinds website; Annemarie Lewis Thomas, Principal of the Musical Theatre Academy, who launched the #time4change Mental Health Charter for the Arts; and the Rt Revd Geoff Annas, Bishop of Stafford, a TCUK trustee with 30 years’ first-hand experience as a theatre chaplain. The lecture is free and open to all. Afterwards there will be refreshments and the opportunity to mingle and talk further.

ArtsMinds – Mental Health Resources for Arts Professionals

ArtsMinds is a collaborative initiative from Equity, BAPAM, Spotlight and The Stage to bring together into one place a raft of resources for performers and creative practitioners facing mental health issues. Our starting point was to try to uncover the scale of mental health issues within our industry by putting out a survey to arts professionals to which more than 5000 people responded. This new site reflects their concerns, highlighting resources to help with worries about health, careers, relationships and finances, plus information about how to help others, and what to do if you need immediate help.

One in four people will experience mental health problems and it’s important to access the right support when its needed. It’s also important to remember that the majority of people recover or learn to manage their mental health issue.

It is our hope that ArtsMinds will help support people in our industry who are dealing with emotional stress and mental health challenges. We also hope this new resource will encourage more people to talk about their situations and go some way to help raise awareness and help dissipate some of the stigma surrounding these issues.

Like athletes, performing artists need to be as healthy as possible, yet are constantly at risk of injury and illness. In some ways performers are more vulnerable – risking muscle damage, hearing difficulties, voice loss, severe stress and anxiety. Yet unlike sportspeople, their health problems are largely unrecognised, so that if they get sick, they struggle to find health practitioners who really understand their needs.

BAPAM has been helping performers since 1984. We have in-depth understanding of their work-related health problems. We also appreciate the financial and other career pressures they are under. Our services are unique, essential and irreplaceable – they save careers and enable Britain to maintain its top class performing arts scene.

It is excellent to receive such an expert service, especially as I am a musician of limited financial ability. I have been strongly reassured and leave here very happy that I can keep playing

Workshop: An Introduction to Autogenic Mindful Relaxation for Performing Artists

On Saturday 7 May, Giovanna Reitano will hold a workshop suitable for all performers who are interested in learning mind-body relaxation skills.

Info: This workshop gives an insight on Autogenic Training, and on how autogenic practice can be used for self-awareness and exploration, and as a tool to reduce performance-related distress or symptoms. The workshop is designed for performers who are interested in learning mind-body relaxation skills for self-development, and to enhance their performance.

Workshop Leader: Giovanna Reitano, Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and Autogenic Trainer with background in Music Performance and Applied Theatre. Giovanna’s work with performers focuses on the use of relaxation techniques to prevent and reduce performance-related stress.
