Alexander Technique Research Update

If you’re interested in the ergonomics of musicianship then you may remember a previous post where we featured the research of Alison Loram. Alison is a violinist and BAPAM-registered Alexander Technique teacher working with performers. Alison is also a research scientist in the field of musicians health (and biodiversity in domestic gardens), and has published a number of papers.

Exploring the premise that musicians are subject to a wide range of medical and performance-related problems due to physical and psychological demands, Alison’s thesis for her masters in Performing Arts Medicine, which is now published and open access, looked into chronic profession-limiting problems in musicians: Underlying mechanisms and neuroplastic routes to recovery

A related presentation considers the scientific basis of the Alexander Technique, and presents results of experimental research into Alexander teaching methodology: Explaining the Alexander Technique to clinicians and scientists: Psycho-physical re-education – an introduction to cognitive-motor system-level causes of performance-related problems.

Health and Wellbeing Month – in Association with The Musicians’ Union, Help Musicians UK and BAPAM

Through August 2016, we are delighted to be partnering with Help Musicians UK (HMUK) and the Musicians Union (MU) for Health and Wellbeing Month, packed with events where health and performance experts meet music creators to share essential skills for peak performance throughout a healthy and successful career. Health and Wellbeing Month sees each organisation bring their own focus and expertise to benefit the whole UK community of musicians.

Events will be held in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, and London, with more to be confirmed across the UK.

WORKSHOPS

Expert BAPAM trainers will host an array of events sharing practical skills to boost performance and avoid health problems. From Vocal Health, to Ways to Beat Stress and Deal with Perfectionism, right through to Drumming without Pain, the workshops will be available to all musicians or artists, at any stage of their career.

MUSICIANS INSIGHTS

Musicians Insights are an ‘In Conversation’ series of events raising awareness of key health issues for musicians. We’ll hear personal stories from musicians who have dealt with particular issues. The discussions will provide a better understanding of musicians’ individual situations and show about how various charities and services fit into the support network for musicians. Musicians Insights will be an informal yet informative platform to widen perceptions of what it means to be a professional musician, and throw some insight into what can be done to improve situations for the future.

Whose Body Is It Anyway?

Sally Burgess (Singing Teacher) and Fiona Bryan (Alexander Teacher) began working together by chance 4 years ago. Although from very different backgrounds they discovered a common interest underpinning their teaching techniques – the importance and potential of mind-body awareness.

They decided to explore this more deeply via a series of workshops for singers combining their respective areas of expertise and were subsequently asked by “Live Music Now” to work with groups of wind and string players.

They are delighted to have this opportunity to share their experiences with you. They will describe in detail their collaborative teaching methods and put them into action with the aid of some (brave) singing volunteers.

Research: Feeling Nervous in Performance

Are you a performer? Have you experienced performance anxiety?

Has a particular approach helped you? Would you like to share this experience in an informal 90-minute focus group session and be part of the research into a new article on what feeling nervous entails and how this can be managed through various somatic-based methods?

Somatic means ‘of the body’ and examples of these techniques include Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique and Autogenic Training.

Researcher, Robert Vesty is a lecturer in Theatre Arts at Middlesex University. He is interested in meeting and talking to performers who have experienced performance anxiety and tried an approach to managing this. He is interested in a range of experience, however ‘mild’ or ‘acute’ the effects, and a range of approaches, especially somatic approaches such as the Feldenkrais Method, Alexander Technique, and Meditation but also other approaches such as CBT or psychotherapy.

Robert has a background in acting and dance, and continues to perform. He is currently training to be a Feldenkrais practitioner, and is also conducting wider research into what position fear, anxiety and nervousness play in some improvisatory performance practices.

You do not need to be have been a BAPAM client. The study offers a chance to find out more about a variety of interesting approaches to managing nervousness and performance anxiety, and enhancing performance practice. All group members will also be offered the chance to attend a free Feldenkrais (ATM) class at the Chisenhale Dance Space in east London. The focus-group session is provisionally scheduled for the first/second week of October and will take place at Middlesex University, Hendon campus.

Your participation is voluntary and confidential, unless you choose to be credited in the article which may be published in a special Feldenkrais focused edition of Theatre, Dance & Performance Training in 2015

BAPAM Scotland Awareness Meeting Report

BAPAM CEO, Deborah Charnock, and Office and Clinics Manager, Clare Hicks came to meet 30 people in Glasgow last Saturday afternoon at a meeting organised by me to introduce BAPAM to the performers and the BAPAM Scottish Directory members to performers and each other. It’s never been done until now!

Deborah and Clare outlined BAPAM’s current and future plans with an overview of the Directory and how to get involved, and Clare explained how BAPAM clinics are administered from the London HQ and what happens when Scottish performers contact them.

In my role as the BAPAM Glasgow clinician I then commented on historical and current activity at BAPAM Glasgow. I talked about why people come, how they are assessed and what might be the outcomes.

Natasha Gerson, BAPAM Trustee and Equity Co Vice-President, Dance Councillor, (for UK), and member of the Scottish Committee highlighted Equity’s relationship with BAPAM and described personal benefits from the BAPAM system.

The BAPAM Directory members present… Dr Sara Watkin (BAPAM Clinician, Edinburgh), Patrice Berque (physiotherapist), Josephine Keys (physiotherapist), Isobel Anderson (piano and Alexander Technique teacher), and Richard Beauchamp, each presented themselves… the who/what/why of their roles within performing arts medicine.

The audience and speakers performed impeccably and asked many questions, suggested many good ideas and had lots of opportunity to network among the students, institutional representatives, performers, BAPAM staff and healthcare professionals present.

I set out with the aim of increasing awareness among performers and healthcare professionals of BAPAM in Scotland. This is an ongoing process but this meeting’s success means we are on our way!!

Musical Athletes

This Weekend, 7th/8th July, the Cheltenham Music Festival plays host to Musical Athletes, a series of talks on the musical body – how it works, how it sometimes doesn’t work, and how it can be fixed. Organised jointly by BAPAM and the Cheltenham Festivals Laboratory, the event takes a look at the musculoskeletal demands on musicians’ bodies, voice production, injuries and breathing techniques, as well as complementary therapies including Alexander Technique and Mindfulness.

Aaron Williamon, Professor of Performance Science at the Royal College of Music, will be analysing the physiological effects of performance on concert pianist, Melvyn Tan, by measuring his heart rate, breathing, skin temperature and posture during his solo recital on Sunday morning.
