Injury Prevention at The Purcell School for Young Musicians

The Purcell School’s Specialist Physiotherapist, Sarah Upjohn, has had her pioneering work incorporated in the school’s new Playing-Related Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention Policy. While working at the school (and helping performers here at BAPAM), Sarah’s Doctoral work at the University of Cambridge has focused on preventing playing-related injuries in young musicians. Most of these problems, which musicians starting university and entering the profession frequently already suffer from, are preventable. The Purcell School’s strategy to identify risk factors and improve injury prevention awareness among pupils, staff, parents and all involved with the school, is exemplary in preparing young musicians for healthy and succesful careers.

‘Composed’ – a Film about Performance Anxiety, Exclusive London Screening

Composed invites you into the world of professional classical music, for an exploration of the many causes of and solutions for performance anxiety.  This feature documentary brings together dozens of professionals from prestigious orchestras, symphonies, and music schools to discuss their personal journeys, and consider how best to achieve excellence in the face of enormous pressure. Composed finally confirms what so many of us have always secretly wondered – no, it’s not just you who has experienced the physical and mental agonies of performance anxiety, and yes, there are many ways to overcome the symptoms and deliver peak auditions and performances.

A special preview screening, followed by a Q&A with director, John Beder, will be held at the 1901 Arts Club, Waterloo, London, on Tuesday 2nd May. Doors open at 6pm and the film will be screened at 7pm.

Survey: Musical ergonomics in professional UK orchestras

Are you a musician working in a professional UK-based orchestra? Could you help us support research into performer healthcare by completing a short anonymous survey on musical ergonomics?

If so, please read the information below before you complete the survey. The survey should take no more than 5 minutes.

Subject: A survey of musicians’ knowledge, access to and use of musical ergonomics in professional UK orchestras.

Hello my name is Teresa Airley, and I would like to invite musicians’ aged 18 years or over, working in professional UK-based orchestras, to participate in a voluntary and anonymous survey on musical ergonomics.  I am undertaking an MSc in performing arts medicine at University College London, and I am interested in learning what motivates musicians to use ergonomic aids.

What are ergonomics? Ergonomics are aids that support musicians within their working environment.  These can be instrument specific adaptations to help reduce playing discomfort, or improve playing posture.  For example chin or thumb rests, or straps to support instrument weight and maintain good posture.  Or, advice on healthy practice such as posture, warm-ups, stretches, and regular breaks.  Environmental ergonomics include appropriate seating, lighting, and hearing protection within performing venues.

Why is this study being done?  Musicians are at risk of developing playing-related injuries.  Education on healthy practice and use of ergonomic aids can help to reduce, or prevent injuries.  My survey explores what motivates musicians to use ergonomic aids, and how knowledge of musical ergonomics is acquired, and what benefits or barriers there are to using ergonomics at work.

Consent: Completing the survey implies consent to participate in this research study, and as participation is anonymous it will not be possible to withdraw your data once you have completed your questionnaire.

How and what data will be collected, and where will it be stored? This survey is anonymous and all information you provide is confidential.   No individuals will be identified in any reports arising from this research.  The survey is available via Opinio and all data gathered is held securely within University College London data centres.  This project has been approved by the UCL Research Ethics Committee.

January 2017 Newsletter

2017 is off to a flying start here at BAPAM, and we already have some great events to share. Our Training Day on May 20 focuses on Anxiety. YCAT’s next Sounding Board event for performers covers health and wellbeing and features BAPAM Trainer, Jane Oakland. On March 17, Graham Fitch gives a performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations in support of BAPAM. We also have news of our next Induction Day, which is open to all – an introduction to the field of performing arts medicine and a great way to find out more about our work and how you could get involved.

Goldberg Variations Concert to raise funds for BAPAM

An opportunity to hear the complete Goldberg Variations by J S Bach, performed by pianist Graham Fitch

Long regarded as the most serious and ambitious work for keyboard, the Goldberg Variations display Bach’s exceptional knowledge of the many different styles of music of his day, and his own exquisite performing techniques. Originating from a simple idea – a beautiful aria over a repeating bass – the thirty variations present the history of Baroque music in microcosm: lavish displays of fashionable expressive elements of the high Baroque, with just a hint of Classical idealism, together with magnificent structure and formal beauty.

Acclaimed pianist, teacher and writer Graham Fitch has performed the Goldberg Variations on numerous occasions across four continents to rapturous acclaim.

BAPAM invites you to a special performance of J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor at St John’s Smith Square in London on Monday 13 June at 7:30pm. Discounted ticket prices are available to supporters of BAPAM, and income from these tickets will support our work.

Bach composed his Mass in B minor over a period of a quarter of a century, and it was not performed complete in his lifetime. Even today, the Mass remains one of the supreme challenges for choirs, soloists and orchestras—a many-faceted work that is grand, lyrical, intimate and ultimately transcendent.

We are excited to be associated with the performance on 13 June, which will be given by the London Handel Orchestra and Pegasus Choir, with a stellar roster of internationally acclaimed soloists— Julia Doyle (soprano), Renata Pokupic  (mezzo-soprano), Charles Daniels  (tenor) and Stephan Loges (bass), directed by Adrian Butterfield. The London Handel Orchestra’s performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion at St John’s Smith Square in 2015, directed by Adrian Butterfield, was described by one reviewer as the most perfectly performed musical experience in many years (musicOMH). For the Mass in B Minor, Pegasus, one of London’s leading chamber choirs, join the same orchestra and director, with whom they are frequent collaborators.

The choir performed a benefit concert for BAPAM in 2014, and we are delighted that they have offered us the chance to be associated with the performance on 13 June.

Remembering the pianist Raymond Banning on the 3rd anniversary of his death.

Raymond Banning was a Concert Pianist and Professor of Piano at Trinity College of Music, London until 2010 when aged just 58 he was diagnosed with a rare and rapidly progressing form of young onset dementia. Sadly Raymond passed away on 2nd Dec 2012 aged 60.

Raymond’s wife Lorraine Womack-Banning presents and performs this recital as a dedication to Raymond and a fundraiser for two of the organisations who offered great support to Raymond and Lorraine.

Royal Society of Musicians Annual Charity Concert

Two of Britain’s finest award-winning string quartets, the Sacconi and Navarra, are joined at the Wigmore Hall by top British cellist, Guy Johnston in a programme of contrasts – the brilliant textures and vibrant colours of Bridge and Ravel and the titanic Classical quintet by Schubert.

The Navarra String Quartet is highly sought-after, with an international reputation, receiving awards such as the MIDEM Classique Young Artist Award and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship. They have been described as “one of the most dynamic and poetic string quartets of today”.

Since their formation in 2001, the Sacconi Quartet have rooted a reputation for their seductive style. With their own record label and many critically acclaimed recordings, The Sacconi’s four founding members continue to demonstrate a shared passion for quartet repertoire, bringing a fresh and sparky feel to string playing and reaching out to new audiences worldwide.

Guy Johnston has fast become one of the UK’s finest soloists and chamber musicians. He is a professor at the Royal Academy of Music and patron of many youth charities and organisations. Guy has established himself as not only an inspiration on the cello but a figurehead of music-making in Britain.

All three cellos being performed on at this concert are on long-term loans to the cellists by the Royal Society of Musicians.
