Shane Kelly, Healthcare Director at The Royal Ballet
Shane Kelly completed his undergraduate studies at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. His early career as a physiotherapist started by working in sports clinics in the suburbs of Melbourne. Before moving to the UK he added a Masters Degree in Sport Physiotherapy to his tertiary qualifications, and was Postgraduate Scholar at the Australian Institute of Sport. He has been a physiotherapist working in elite athletics for 15 years and has been part of four Olympic cycles with the Australian and Great British teams. He was with British Athletics for ten years and was the Head Physical Therapist with British Athletics for five years, where he led changes in governance, strategy and leadership of the therapy team. He took up the post of Clinic Director of The Royal Ballet Healthcare in September 2020.

Dr Sarah Upjohn, Performing Arts Medicine Physiotherapist and Educator
Sarah is a Performing Arts Medicine Physiotherapist and Educator, working mainly with instrumental musicians. She has extensive clinical experience in assessing & treating playing-related musculoskeletal injuries in instrumental musicians, and she is passionate about injury prevention, and promoting musculoskeletal well-being in musicians.
Sarah is the physiotherapist at The Purcell School for Young Musicians and well-being lead for the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain. She is an assessing clinician and educator for BAPAM and also works in a thriving private practice near Cambridge.
Additionally, she is in high demand as a teacher and speaker, and has contributed her expertise to school INSET sessions for visiting instrument teachers, INSET sessions at County Music Hubs, the Royal College of Music Junior Department, the Royal Northern College of Music undergraduate and post-graduate wellbeing curriculum, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic ‘Careers in the Music Industry’ Study Day, BAPAM Healthy Practice training sessions, Musicians’ Union ‘well-being for musicians’ activities and the Benedetti Foundation.
She has a Doctorate of Education from the University of Cambridge, and has had her research findings accepted for presentation at National, International and World Conferences (UK National Physiotherapy Conferences (2012, 2017 and 2019), International Society of Music Education World Conference (Baku, Azerbaijan, 2018), Performing Arts Medicine Association International Symposium (New Orleans, 2020).

BAPAM training events are ideal for healthcare and education practitioners working in the performing arts who wish to deepen their understanding and enhance their skills. Expert led sessions explore research, evidence and practice to treat and prevent common and complex health problems specific to artists, creators and performance professionals. We share knowledge and invite discussion on key topics in current performing arts medicine practice. Our approach is multidisciplinary: physiological and psychological care for healthy and sustainable creative practice.
Online sessions are held on the last Wednesday of the month from 7pm BST. Most sessions are recorded for ticket holders who cannot attend on the day (please check the event description).
